Article summary

In this article, Tim Elmore explains the many challenges that youth have in the workplace. He says that he has heard about and done many job interviews on younger adults that have just graduated, and he explains how the young adults come across as too loud, too forward, too self-absorbed, and are lacking self-awareness. Elmore states that he knows they are smart enough to get the job, but many do not because they have a hard time showing up on time, gossiping in the workplace, and never developing a strong work ethic. He even goes on to say that many youth ties too much of their identity to their appearance like tattoos, hair color, wardrobe, and more. Some of the youth refuse to give some of these things up, therefore costing them their job.
Social intelligence is defined as the capacity to effectively negotiate complex social relationships and environments. Also, it was originally defined in 1920 by Edward Throndike as, "The ability to understand and manage men, women, boys, and girls, to act wisely in human relations." This is a very important component in developing healthy relationships. Daniel Goleman even writes in his book on the topic of social intelligence, and he states that based on social neuroscience research, proposing social intelligence includes empathy, attunement, social cognition, concern, self-presentation, and influence. Goleman also states how social relationships that we have can even have a direct impact on our health. He even goes on to state the deeper the relationship, the deeper the impact.
The reason social intelligence is so important is because it separates us from animals, as our brains can navigate complicated circumstances with out he human beings. With technology being the way many people now communicate it becomes hard to find people who are strong in social intelligence. So, when a youth has it, and is looking for a job they become more marketable, because many interviews begin with first impressions, and someone with good social makes a good appearance, a good handshake, a smile, and common common courtesy.
This whole article seemed to speak to me personally, because I see this all the time with my fellow peers in high school. Many are always late for class, never have a nice appearance, and are very disrespectful. The students that I am blessed to be in the HMP program with are always dressed nicely, good attitude, and have made good relationships with their mentor. The whole time I was reading this article it made me think of my favorite bible verse. Which is 1 Timothy 4:12, "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." I love this verse, because it lets many young people know they can do great things even when an adult tells them they cannot, but God stills believes in them.
